Over 8 million
people are affected by carpal tunnel syndrome every
year.
Carpal tunnel
syndrome is characterized by pain, numbness, tingling,
itching
and burning in the wrist, top of the hand, fingers and
thumb. The
condition
is caused by over use of the wrist.
The carpal tunnel
is made up of the carpal ligament - a tough, elastic band
of tissue
that connects 9 wrist bones in
the front of the wrist. The flexor
tendons run inside
the carpal tunnel.
When
you over use your
wrist doing
things like sports, computer tasks (clicking
the mouse and typing), weight lifting and manual labor,
the flexor tendons that
live inside the carpal tunnel swell and become irritated as
they compress the
median nerve.
As you move your
fingers, the swollen tendons rub against each
other, causing
pain, tingling and numbness. Sometimes, a shooting pain can be
felt,
particularly in people who have a tendency to retain fluid
(for example, pregnant women). This happens because your median
nerve is being aggravated by the tendons.
It becomes a little bit too crowded inside your carpal tunnel
and the median nerve
is telling you about it.
With continued
overuse of your wrist, the condition can worsen with
increasing pain
over time. In some cases, carpal tunnel syndrome can be so severe that
it
actually
limits use of the wrist and
hand. Many
carpal tunnel syndrome sufferers
report that the pain and discomfort worsens at night,
especially while reading or driving. Some experience loss
of the muscle tissue of the thumb.
So
you think you may have carpal tunnel syndrome?
Typical methods of carpal tunnel
treatment include...
Each of these
"traditional" treatments presents its own
set of risks
and drawbacks - Such
as the splint or brace,
which is only a temporary band-aid that
can only
addresses the symptoms but not the
cause.
Drugs can have
side-effects and may cause dependence.
Steroids pose
health risks. Acupuncture is expensive. And of
course, no
one wants their wrist sliced open.
Plus, in 50% of the cases surgery doesn't even prove
successful!
