Carpal tunnel syndrome
is typically
treated by
one or more of the
following methods:
Splint or Brace
Goal: The
splint or brace immobilizes the wrist and reduces
movement, which
reduces swelling as the tendons
rest.
Risks or
Challenges: Wrist splints and wrist braces are
inconvenient
because
they restrict
movement and impede your daily activities.
They hurt the healing process when used too long,
weakening the muscles that should be
strengthened. They're
also sweaty, itchy and
cumbersome.
Carpal Tunnel-Release
Surgery Goal: This is a
surgical procedure where the carpal tunnel ligament gets
severed
in
half, widening the
tunnel and releasing pressure on the overcrowded
tendons.
Risks or challenges: The problem here is that integrity
and strength of the
carpal tunnel is lost, causing the flexor tendons to
splay out. Surgery is irreversible!
Additionally, surgery poses all sorts of risks such as
loss of grip strength, potentially
long recovery time, chance of infection... and even
a failure rate of over
50%.
Note:
Only 23% of all carpal tunnel syndrome
patients returned to their previous
professions following
surgery.
Non Steroidal Anti-inflammatory
Drugs
(NSAIDS)
Goal:
Anti-inflammatory drugs
reduce swelling and relieve
pain.
Risks or
Challenges: Drugs offer temporary relief, which can lead
to addiction.
Over time, pill-popping, even of Advil or Ibuprofen, can become
expensive. Not to
mention, who really knows what the potential threats to the
liver and other organs might
be from repeated, long-term use of even OTC
drugs.
Cortisone
Goal:
Cortisone is a
powerful,
anti-inflammatory injected steroid
drug that
reduces swelling in the short
term.
Risks or
Challenges: The problem with
cortisone is its potential health risks -
for example, reducing immune response, destroying body tissue,
thinning joint cartilage, weakening the joint.
Side effects can include dizziness,
nausea, trouble sleeping,
and increased possibility of infection. With
steroids, carpal tunnel sufferers frequently need
to "up their dose" as the body grows immune. In many
cases, inflammation occurs
inside joints because the
steroids stay there and
crystallize instead of breaking down inside the
body.
Other methods of carpal tunnel
treatment include massage
therapy
and acupuncture. These
methods treat only the symptoms, are
typically not
covered by insurance, and can
be very
expensive
with
repeated use!
